Finding good sex addiction counseling is not easy. As I looked through the yellow pages the other day I realized that very few counselors specialize in sexual addiction. Perhaps you are asking why any old counselor cannot do sex addiction counseling. The answer is complicated and it has a lot to do with the counselors own belief and value system. For example, some counselors do not believe in sexual addiction. The consequence of meeting with someone with this belief was demonstrated to me by a woman who came to my office. Here is her story.
"I was told to increase my response to my husbands sexual advances. I did this but it only fueled his sexual appetite. Soon he was asking for more and more sex. he also wanted it in ways I wasn't comfortable. When I didn't want to have sex he would go back to what the therapist had told me to do to improve things."
More than once I have heard stories like this. Others, who genuinely want help for their sexual addiction claim that they were told that their sexual behavior was normal even when they themselves have felt that there was something wrong with their behavior. I don't want this to be the case with you.
To help you find the best sexual addiction counseling, I've created a few general rules to help you succeed.
Rule #1: Find a therapist who understands and believes in sex addiction. The best place to find a counselor in your area who understands sexual addiction is sash.net. This is the home page for The Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health. They have a listing of professional members who are members of this organization. You should be able to find a therapist in your area. Members of SASH generally focus on treating sexual addiction.
Rule #2: Look at the whole picture. Do you or the person who needs help have more addictions than sex? Researchers have found that most addicts have more than one addiction. A good sexual addiction counselor should know this and help you explore the possibility of other addictions. It doesn't do any good to treat one addiction just to have another one crop up.
Rule #3: Attend groups! Sexual addiction treatment is clearly more effective if you are attending groups and have a sponsor. Researchers have found that addiction treatment is more effective if a person is attending meetings regularly. I should also mention that one way to find a good sexual addiction counselor is to attend a sex addiction group and ask someone attending that group for the name of a good counselor.
Rule #4: Get help for everyone involved. A sexual addiction does not just impact the person with the addiction. It impacts a spouse, children, and possibly even extended family. I recommend that a spouse attend support groups. We can get so caught up in helping the person with the addiction that we forget the spouse or partner. Make sure that in your counseling you find support for family members who have been impacted by the addiction. If you have questions of where to find support groups for the spouse I would recommend COSA Recovery. In closing, I would recommend that you understand that overcoming a sexual addiction requires time and effort. Anyone who promises a quick solution can rarely deliver. The best way to succeed is to keep tryinging until you find a solution that works for you. The most successful people do the following things.
- They find a good counselor. They attend therapy a lot during the firs phases of treatment. Then overtime they space out their sessions. Even when things are going well they attend therapy periodically.
- They attend groups and get group support. They find a sponsor. They feel a part of the recovering community.
- They continue learning as much as they can on their own. Those who continue learning are the most likely to succeed in the long run. Here's a few solutions that you can try on your own.
